;; kyrie was born to sicillia lavonne engels, and has no idea which of the many men her mother has been with is her father.
;; she was raised in one of the few existing middle class families, although her mother is convinced that she is world famous, still in her prime, and filthy rich.
;; her mother is an actress, although she hasn't been in anything since her days as a stage actress that traveled and put on shows for government heads. her mother was friends with prince nikolai boris reef's ex wife (except while they were still married). nik didn't like her mother and kyrie wasn't born yet, but nik was polite and would accept her dinner invitations and continued for a few years after his divorce before he realized what a snob sicillia was always going to be and let her fall out of favor.
;; sicillia never lost hope and so continued writing to him and sending an occasional invitation.
;; eventually sicillia became both pregnant and depressed, realizing her prime was gone and she wasn't going to get any more roles. fortunately the government was grateful for her past work and she would be financially stable for the rest of her life. if she wasn't such a heavy spender, she would probably still be an upper class citizen. when kyrie was born it took her fourteen years not to resent her daughter's life completely. kyrie grew up wondering why her mother was so evil and hated her so much. she became a mature young woman at a young age, realizing that she didn't have the father she needed and she wanted to be nothing like her mother, who was a deluded selfish snob.
;; kyrie would fight with her mother whenever the elder would comment about things that kyrie didn't agree with, or whenever she would act superior or better than kyrie knew she really was. she began to question her mother's sanity when she was around six years old.
;; at age eight she met her best friend forever, tosha. the girl was a couple years older than her but had fallen behind in school because of her parent's class and living on their farm. the two hit it off right away and even though kyrie's mother didn't approve of socializing with persons of a lesser class, they pursued their friendship.
;; tosha provided the friend and distraction from her failure of a family life that kyrie desperately needed. for awhile, her and tosha enjoyed lavish slsspovers, and kyrie's mother would provide them with whatever they wanted, glad her daughter was finally coming to appreciate the value of money and being girly. eventually, kyrie's mother found out about tosha's social class and kyrie was told never to see the girl again.
;; the most miserable year of kyrie's life was when she was eleven. she could only see tosha at school and her mother was crueler than ever. fortunately, that was the year that something prodded nik reef to finally accept sicillia's invitation for dinner. from that night forward, nik and kyrie were bound to each other.
;; nik would visit kyrie whenever he could - he would bring her things from strange places and tell her stories of his travels and his family history. he never mentioned that he was a prince, and for some reason kyrie's mother had never said that nik was anything but filthy rich. probably because she didn't want her daughter to know that she was continually getting rejected by royalty - something her mother deluded herself into thinking she was and wanted to be more than anything.
;; eventually it became hard for nik to visit kyrie all the time because of kyrie's bizarre mother and nik's busy schedule. apparently he was working for the government for money, though he wouldn't say what. there was awhile where she didn't see him at all for a long period - this was when nik read the letters from his brother raphael and went to meet him.
;; when kyrie was twelve, her mother was so distracted with thoughts of prince nikolai that she didn't mind if kyrie went to stay with her friends virtually all the time. she must have known kyrie's only real friend was tosha, but if it was out of site it was out of mind. kyrie and tosha were together all the time. they became sisters, practically.
;; kyrie convinced nik to come to dinner at tosha's family's farm. nik obliged and tosh and family were delighted to serve and dine with such a regal man. more than anything, kyrie wanted tosha to see the face of the man she talked about virtually all the time. nik promised to pay them back for their hospitality and it is with this in mind that kyrie convinces nik to invite tosha to the academy as well.
;; there were many times where kyrie was whisked off to nik's castle. she became close with raphael, who was as theatrical as she was, and basil, who became something of a dear friend and beloved uncle to her. she fit in with the reef's so well she became a symbol of jealousy for zina marie schon, who kyrie never really got to know and so didn't like even before she hated her for her closeness to nikolai.
;; kyrie's destiny revolves around the academy and nik. the prince is her life, and she hopes that someday she might mean as much to him as he does to her.
