She nodded in agreement. It definitely didn't feel like only a few weeks, it felt comfortable which made the time seem to fly.
She laughed " yeah, that's pretty sad" s
I feel like I've graded more papers than I've smoked, which is telling you something." He paused to take a puff and leaned back, relaxing into the pillows and contemplating his existence here at the academy.
"You know, I keep too busy. I know I've already said that but sometimes I wonder if Nik really needs me or if he's just keeping me here to keep an eye on me. He must worry that I'll go and do something to shame the family name. I don't think that's Zina's influence on him, that's just the way he is. He's a respectable man. He is a prince, you know. It makes sense the way he is. I just wonder why he can't be more relaxed towards me like Raphael." Basil sighed and turned to Kyrie, handing her the pipe for whenever she felt like using it.
"Perhaps he cares and is just worried the government will catch me and do something horrible. I like thinking that - that deep down the reason I'm here is so he can protect me, and that he's hard on me because he loves me and all that. Sometimes I feel like I'm failing him though. He is a hard ass, don't get me wrong, but he's done so much for me. I'm not saying I'm about to change my ways - I'm far too old to change. Besides, I don't want to. I'm quite happy with life the way I've chosen it. I love working with all you young people and I adore tending my flowers everyday. And nothing beats sneaking around Nik and still having my fun, in good measure, of course. But I don't know. I'm not saying I regret who I am or the way I live, but I feel like I haven't really expressed how grateful I am to Nik. I hardly act like an Uncle. I don't really know what I'm saying. I'm sorry dear, you'll have to forgive this old man for rambling about his feelings. It's just, you're really the only one who would listen, and sometimes we just need to get things off our shoulders, even if there isn't much we can do to change things. I wouldn't really want anything to change anyways. I just worry that I'll die and Nik will think ill of me instead of knowing me as you do. I mean, I treat you more like family than I do my own nephew. It's just all so strange, you know - he's always been more mature than I am." He gave a little giggle that showed he wasn't depressed and was coming back to himself. "Goodness knows he's more of a man than I. Poor chap. He really needs a girlfriend. I don't think he and Zina ever... You know. I just think he needs a bit of release. Maybe he'd be a bit less touchy and snappy and moody all the time."

"Well that's good. I'm glad everything is going well. We aren't very far into the school year - only a few weeks - but it seems like months, doesn't it? I feel like I've graded more papers than I've smoked, which is telling you something." He paused to take a puff and leaned back, relaxing into the pillows and contemplating his existence here at the academy.

Basil's over-drawn gestures made Kyrie giggle. Basil was always entertaining and fun to be with. She often wondered why he didn't teach theater. Raphael was an excellent teacher, but with Basil there was never a dull moment and his childish enthusiasm made anything fun. "You making lesson plans? No way." She winked and added, "Seriously though, you have a good point. Why make things boring when they can be fun? I like the way you teach." She playfully patted his arm. "Herbology's my favorite class." She sat forward smiling but was soon blushing. Nik was mentioned and she agreed - it probably
was
Zina's influence that made Nik the way he was.
What does he see in her anyway? Sure shes pretty but...
Basil's friendly tap brought her back. Noticing Basil's interested expression made her laugh again. His freedom brought out the best in her and stopped her from thinking too intently on Nik.
Stretching she then leaned back on her hands. "I've been good. Classes are still going well. I've been keeping up with them. But man oh man... people in my math class, and even people from my science class, keep asking me for math help. I mean there's only so much my brain can take." Shaking her head and laughing she got up to get Basil's pipe from his office.
On her way back she thought about how nice of a friend Basil is - and as she sat back down she said affectionately, "You know what Basil? You're pretty awesome."

Flashing a quick grin at Kyrie he greeted her with a tight hug before shivering and quickly using his key card to unlock the door again. He held it open and shivered at the door. When he turned around, his young visitor seemed to have already made herself comfortably at home. He joined her by plopping himself up against the other pillow and let out a heavy sigh. "He makes me work too hard, you know. He knows how much I detest structure, so he makes me a teacher." He gave Kyrie a look of severe disapproval and waved his hands, gesturing dramatically. "Deadlines, guidelines, outlines, assembly lines, lines lines lines! Oh my Lord! I can't stand it. Grading homework, making lesson plans - LESSON PLANS! Yes, me." He scoffed. "Lesson plans are for people who can't wake up each day with something intriguing to teach. Plans are for people too boring to create something off the top of their head as they walk into class. People so uninterested or uneducated in their subjects that they run out of topics to lecture about for a day." He sighed. "Or people like dear Nikky, who have to write down and file every last detail of their lives. Although, in his case it's probably Zina's influence. I don't blame him." He chuckled good-naturedly and tapped Kyrie's arm. "I'm sorry dear, I've been rambling. How have you been?" He leaned back and gave her a genuinely interested look.

Kyrie tried her best not to groan out loud.
Be patient!
She had to keep reminding herself. She scooted closer to her roommate who was sitting on the floor next to her, and grabbed a pencil from the pile of worksheets. "The correct answer is D," she said punctually.
As she was explaining the simplicity of a simple physics problem, she wondered why it was so hard for her roomy to understand. She had to reminded herself,
Just because you understand Mr. Walker's class so easily doesn't mean everyone else has to. You were once bad at math.
She had a good memory of her six grade teacher and how much he'd helped her with math and her enthusiasm grew - and along with it, encouragement for the girl she was tutoring. "Right, you're getting it. Very good," she said smiling; "try this one." She pointed with her pencil at another equation and while her attempted writing the answer, she looked behind her where her digital clock displayed the time. She was late to meet Basil! She jumped to her feet and placed her side bag on her shoulder. She took once last look at her roomy as she was about to leave.
"You'll do fine," she said seeing the worried look on the other girl's face. She hesitated for a moment at the door and soon hopped back over where she bent down to pick up the worksheet. Pulling a pencil out of her bag she filled out all the problems in 40 seconds flat. "There you go!" she said dropping the sheet to the floor and happily closing the door behind her.
It was so cold outside she pulled her coat around her as closely as she could. She was used to similar weather in Poland, but today was especially chilly. She walked down the hill to the green house and knocked on the door. Basil greeted her - and once she was certain the door was closed, and it was safe to talk, she let out a loud sigh and dropped her book bag to the floor. "That being quiet thing gets me every time. Sneaking out is fun but it's hard." She laughed and plopped down on the quilt. She thought Basil was kind to supply pillows and everything for them. She realized she hadn't for being late yet. "Sorry I'm late, my roommate needed help with her biology homework." She rolled her eyes playfully and leaned back on her hands. She patted the pillow next to her, gesturing for her friend to join her and asked, "So how've you been?"
